The Dawnless Day lasted from March 10 to March 15. The sunlight was blocked, leaving Gondor in darkness. Is this what the people of Gondor saw? Here's a view from my back yard, courtesy of the California wildfires. Noontime looked like dawn.

Could well be.
EDIT: I suspect, though, that the Dawnless Day was even more gloomy.
Sky is still orange today, but at least there's a bit of sunlight filtering through. However, there's a lot more smoke.
Although I compared it to the Dawnless Day in this forum, I told my students to pretend they're living in Mars.
