I needed information for my game, so I did a Google search and found this page. I am using it for my solo games, but it's useful when writing fanfic or even just for general interest.

Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth also includes travel times for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
This is link is really good. I've been wondering how far army of Orcs could travel in a day and how long it took for them to get to the Woodland realm in time for the 15th of March. My husband says an army can travel about 30miles a day (His dad was in the army). Using the scale in the Atlas I estimate it taking at least ten days but I could be wrong.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the info. The Atlas is a great supplement when you need visual aids.
The One Ring Roleplaying Game has Journey Rules that also provide rates of speed for travel under various conditions with an average of 20 miles per day on foot when using well-maintained roads.
I used the travel rates from the MERP game when my characters crossed the Misty Mountains. I can't remember which map I used to determine the exact distance, but I used a map from my Star Frontiers game to plot the characters' actual position. Tough crossing, but everyone made it.
