In FOTR B1C2 I found this line: "'[Sauron] believed that the One had perished'" How could that be possible without him being destroyed also?

B1C2? Not sure what that means.
The way I interpret that passage is that, since the One Ring was such a unique item, even Sauron wasn't completely sure what would be the effects of it's being unmade, much as the Wise were not certain what would become of the Three Rings if Sauron's Ring was destroyed.
