So as we all know, a lot of people don't particularly like these movies in the liberties that were taken. But, at the end of the day, it is likely these movies brought a lot of new fans to the world of Middle-earth and all of Tolkien's work, which can not be a bad thing! And in the future, they could well prove a great way of getting the next generation into their first look at the movie world of Middle-earth too! So, please comment below what you LIKE about these movies :) I will start off and say, the Riddles in the Dark segment, I absolutely love this part of it and how it was done by both Freeman and Serkis, I think it made the whole first movie for me! (Now it's your go :) )

Agreed. For me, Riddles in the Dark scene is the best scene in the Trilogy. I also loved Lee Pace as Thranduil. Luke Evans was good as Bard. And I also enjoyed Legolas being involved (a lot of the actual scenes he was in were stupid, but the fact that he was in it, I enjoyed). Also, Ian McKellen was of course fantastic as Gandalf.
Apart from that... I'm out of compliments haha
I agree with the Legolas fight scenes in The Habit, they were a little over the top 🙄
I actually Liked the interpretation. I though Benedict cumberbatch was great smaug and bard was expertly played. I liked the inclusion of blunt the knives. and the slightly more light hearted feel.
While I enjoyed the trilogy as a whole, I really enjoyed An Unexpected Journey. I enjoyed the soundtrack for all of the movies. I thought Martin Freeman was excellent as Bilbo.
In the extended edition Baby Bilbo's introduction is adorable. Martin on a horse (Pony) was hilarious. One of my favorite scenes is when Bombur catches the sausage. These just make the movie better.
Overall I liked the movies, just some of the fight scenes were overdone or I should say there were too many, that bothered me. Otherwise on the whole I enjoyed it. I thought the hobbit hole scenes where Bilbo meets the dwarves was really good.
I think the actors did a great job in their portrayals.
I enjoyed it. It was different from the books, but still very entertaining 🙂
My favorite character from the Hobbit trilogy was King Thranduil...Lee Pace did a magnificent job of portraying him, King Thranduil.
The Hobbit is worth giving praise and has good battle sequences. It's not as iconic as LOTR tho. My favorite scene is the battle of Moria seeing Thorin Oakensheild do his best to beat Azog. Also love it when I saw Balin and Dwalin even Dain Ironfoot ll. Benedict Cumberbatch played Smaug's voice with deep and strong depth to Smaug's lines. I got goose bumps to see Saruman again and Elrond including Galadriel. It deserves the love and appreciation it gets.
I simply meant that the fight scenes wayyy over did the book. The barrel fights were not even in the books. My daughter actually stopped watching the movies at that point saying it was ridiculous and it was. There was no reason to have made that fight sequence. The Hobbit movie should have been titled Thorin's Hatred of Elves and Azog Too. Neither of which were in the book for crying out loud.
@Jimmie Montgomery I agree. So many of the fights in the Hobbit and LOTR films were way too over the top. Even some Wuxia fight scenes are tame compared to some of the stuff here.
Anyone else noticed that 'Hobit' is misspelled in the forum header (and 'trilogy' should probably be capitalized)?
I didn't notice that
It IS.
There is a lot to like in the Hobbit movies. The acting is superlative. I cannot think of one actor who gave a bad perfomance and the portrayals of Bilbo, Thorin and Thranduil really stand out.
Martin Freeman is wonderful as the young Bilbo.
Richard Armitage gives an impassioned performance as Thorin. HIs moments with Bilbo are moving.
Lee Pace as Thranduil. He was Thranduil. A leashed hurricane. So much restrained power and repressed emotion resulting an astonishing performance.
The design. The Costume Design was beyond this world, such attention to detail.
The music by Howard Shore, who is a genius. The scene in Bag End when the Dwarfs are singing "the Misty Mountains" sung beautifully and soulfully by Armitage and the choreography of movement and the way the scene was shot was a thing of moving beauty. So yes there are some very positive things about the trilogy. .....And breath..... 😁
You gotta love these scenes:

Elrond is a patient host.

Bilbo, his voice going up in pitch :
"Confusticate these Dwarves!" "I don't understand what they're doing in my house!"
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns bold
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The cartoon version of the song is the one that comes to my mind, although the live film version is also good.
I've always like the R/B cartoons better, but Peter's LOTR comes close with Return of the King 1980.
My favorite musical arrangement of the "Misty Mountains" song is a tie between Howard Shore's and the one from the Mind's Eye audio play. The Rankin/Bass ranks at number three after those two.

@andrewlaubacher I have that recording. I haven't listened to it in a long time.
For all the liberties taken in the films, they were still more faithful than this 1966 cartoon:

Yeah, I never really liked Gene Deitch's animation style even with the Tom & Jerry shorts he directed at MGM. And the short takes very many liberties with the story. Did you know that the project began with the goal of making an animated feature film?
