There are very few things about the Peter Jackson movies that I prefer over the books, but this is one of them. In the Hobbit book, a few sentences were dedicated to the death of Thorin. It takes some thinking afterwards to realize the magnitude of this death. Peter Jackson made it a very bittersweet scene, probably one of my favorites in the whole trilogy.

It's a shame though that Thorin is killed by someone who should have already been dead for over 100 years.

I agree it's not the ideal killer, but I shamefully admit that it's better than just dying in battle obscurely.
Yeah, but that's not what happened to Thorin in the book either (though it does desribe how Fili and Kili died). Thorin survived the battle but died of his wounds afterward.
