So In the film Thranduil states he has fought the fire drakes of the North. So 1. where can we read and find out about this as that would be epic. 2) how can he conceal his facial scares so well. and 3)who was legolas's mother?

There are other dragons (than Smaug) Thranduil could have encountered. During 'An Unexpected Party', Thorin says
where 'those days' refers to the reign of his grandfather Thror before the sack of Erebor, and 'the North' refers to the Withered Heath. There is also relevant material in the Lord of the Rings. In 'The Shadow of the Past', Gandalf says

Hence, Smaug was not the only fire-breathing dragon alive after the forging of the Rings of Power. Thranduil's realm is mentioned at the start of Appendix B (The Tale of Years), so we know it dates back as far as the early days of the second age, some 15-1600 years earlier. There are other dragons Thranduil could have encountered. Hang on... If Smaug could have melted the Ring, could Bilbo have hypothetically thrown the ring out into the room that Smaug was rage-burning and ended the trilogy?
@Thorondor It wouldn't have worked. Gandalf told Frodo that not even dragon-fire was hot enough to destroy Sauron's Master Ring. It could only be unmade in the fires from which it was forged.
@Andrew Laubacher Any other Rings could have been destroyed though
The whole business about Thranduil and dragons was original to the films. Tolkien never wrote about such an incident, just as he never wrote anything about the fate of Thranduil's queen.
There was a period in the Third Age, though, when many Dwarves established halls in the Grey Mountains that were later raided and looted by dragons such as Scatha. But Thranduil didn't play a part in that.
Really good discussion topic!
