Great question!! I have actually been working on a video about Gondors armies this week! I have come across some interesting stuff in my research...
Exact numbers and details on Gondors armies are never really confirmed, but they can be estimated...
We know that Lossarnach sent axemen (About 200 men) to Minas Tirith. Morthond/Blackroot Vale sent (Approx. 500) archers, and Dol Amroth brought knights.
It is mentioned that Forlong (Lord of Lossarnach) only brought about a tenth of his strength to the battle. That is a large force to leave behind. We do not know if this is the case for the other armies... but it can be assumed that all Fiefdoms left men behind to protect their own lands and people.
Perhaps massively underestimating the scale and important of the Battle for Minas Tirith.
I will try to look into this is greater detail for the video! :D
Great thanks! from what you've said, it seems like weak leadership was a big reason the defence of Gondor was so light at that point. Looking forward to the video on Gondors' military!
IIRC, all of Gondor was under attack, not just Minas Tirith. The local lords sent whatever troops they could spare, but they were either already fighting for their lives or about to do so.
