I personally don't think there were any orc women, because then there would have to be orc mothers and that means that orcs would have to care for their young and that just doesn't fit with their nature at all. In my head canon, orcs basically just take a crap in a hole and new orcs form in the sludge as seen in the movie adaptation.
With that in mind, I'll address a possible conflict. Concerning the half-orc, half-man abominations that Saruman bred in Isengard in The Two Towers, I think I have a possible explanation. Saruman is a Maiar and likely knows a good bit about genetics and biomechanics, so it's not too far of a stretch to say that he used genetic engineering to combine the two races in a lab in Orthanc. Since orcs are (maybe?) descended from men anyways, the biology probably isn't that different.
Not only is this consistent with all the lore and doesn't violate any character's behaviors, but it also eliminates some rather disturbing imagery...
Yeah I think that makes sense! There are so many different ideas on how Orcs actually came to be, it can get a little confusing. We actually have 3 different videos that touch on trying to explain Tolkiens own ideas on the matter haha
What if interbreeding is nothing more than infusing men with orc blood and either transforming them or their offspring. It's also possible the orcs, being shown as make, breed with women, since men means the race not the gender.
If you don't want any orc females, look at Ork! The Roleplaying Game for ideas. It's a beer-and-pretzels type of game meant for a laugh, but just reading it is worthwhile. The game company's blog even discusses the creation myth (scroll down a bit).
On the other hand,
Are There Female Orcs in Middle-earth? gives a serious discussion about the topic.
Furthermore,
Female Orcs need love too! 😜
Yes, there were female Orcs. In The Silmarillion Tolkien wrote, “for the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Iluvatar”. And in The Hobbit we read about Gollum killing and eating Orc children ("goblin imps").
Gollum didn't want to eat them, but her was hungry and they all lost in a game of riddles.
@Dungeonwyrm Her? Have you gender-bent Smeagol? 😄
What have I done?!
Female Orcs have a variety of roles.
Some fight alongside their menfolk.
Others prefer a more domestic role.
Some Orc-women might fight alongside their men, but I can't think of anything in Tolkien's legendarium that supports that idea.
