Only rules being that they cannot be modern or where the answer is something that doesn't exist in Tolkien's universe.

What riddle would you have given to stump Gollum?
What riddle would you have given to stump Gollum?

In a dark tunnel I saw a bright light;
All saddle, all bridle, all fit for a flight.
I told you three times, but you still don't know.
I've been thinking about this all day, either I'm stupid or this is really hard. What is it??
There's two answers but the first answer (and original answer) is ALL
ALL saddle, ALL bridle, ALL fit for a flight.
The second answer someone else pointed out to me is A
In A dark tunnel I saw A bright light;
All saddle, all bridle, all fit for A flight.
There's also another version of this riddle:
In a dark dungeon I saw a bright light;
All saddle, all bridle, all fit for a flight;
Steel was his arrow and brass was his bow,
There are three answers you still do not know.
That one actually got me.
I'd probably give him some random pop culture reference. The guy's literally been living under a rock.
That would be funny. But Smeagol's Bane said only things that are set in the timeframe(ish) of Tolkien's works.
Dangit.
@Thorondor I know :)
Dragon Magazine #175 has a couple of articles on riddles. Here's one Gollum may get but probably with great difficulty:
A man of a hundred stood out in the cold,
Exchanged his gay headdress, of colors most bold,
'or one of pure ivory just now a day old.
But though freshly dressed, the old man stood alone --
It was his misfortune to live in a wold.
Nobody got this one? The answer is tree.
@eldariontkd Any more? That was a good one. I didn't know what it was.
Sure. Here's another one from the same issue:
In the window she sat weeping.
And with each tear her life went seeping.
I need a little bit for this one! :)
I am colored red and blue and yellow and every other hue of the rainbow. I am long and short, thick and thin, and I often rest coiled up.
I can eat a hundred sheep in a row and still be hungry. What am I?
Rope?
@eldariontkd Nope! Guess again! :P very close though!
@ShireofMiddleEarth Thread? Still guessing on mine?
Not a cloud. Something more terrestrial and man-made.
So rope and thread are close but no cigar? I guess I must quote Gollum, then.
"String... or nothing!"
Not quite :) . Would you like to keep guessing?
I need a little more thinking for your question.
Gotta admit I'm stumped.
Hint on my riddle: It can light up the darkness.
Candle?
The answer is (for mine) a woolen rug :) you were so close!
Candle it is!
The "in the window" caught me :)
@ShireofMiddleEarth Here are a few reasons why people put candles by their windows.
