Does anyone else here play tabletop roleplaying games? Adventures in Middle-earth is still in print. I myself prefer the old Middle Earth Role Playing (MERP) game, which I'm currently running on Tabletop Simulator.
I've been roleplaying since the 1980s. I still play D&D, although I prefer the older editions. Of course, I've tweaked the rules a bit in order to set my game in Middle-earth. MERP is my favorite Middle-earth rpg, but it's a bit chart heavy is now out of print.
For those of you who want to play a tabletop rpg set in Middle-earth, I recommend The One Ring or Adventures in Middle-earth. The latter requires familiarity with D&D 5th Edition. There's also the Lord of the Rings game by Decipher, but that's out of print.
We always say we want to play Adventures in Middle Earth! We even have the books for it. But its only James and I that really want to play, and I dont think a campaign with 2 people is as fun! We do play a lot of Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game though! Big fans of that since its initial release! :D
I have been playing Lord of the Rings Online this past month, although I generally don't play MMOs.
I have been curious about Adventures in Middle Earth, but I don't have the patience to learn D&D 5E. I'd rather convert it to 2E, which is my favorite edition.
That said, if you need more players, have you considered recruiting online? Folks play on Roll20 and Discord. I currently run a MERP game on Tabletop Simulator. Please let me know if you're interested.
When we live stream this week, we will bring it up and see if we have any interest for it. We would definitely need DM that has experience and confidence to run a game
Also, if we do a game, we should have a "session zero" event. That way, everyone can be on the same page, create the characters they want, and solve any technical issues that can impede the game.
I am running a MERP campaign. I plan to run a game this Saturday, although I haven't asked my players. Let me know if you're interested. I may have up to 3 spots available.
Any chance you could record some of it to send to us? So we can get an idea of how it would all work before we would want to commit to doing one on the channel? :)
Wait, are you doing an all-can-join DnD Middle Earth session on Roll20? Can I join? I know how to play 5e somewhat I may need help sometimes, but I would enjoy it.
Thinking about it. I think it would take some time to organise. James and I have only played a couple if times so would definitely need some practice! Haha
If this is something we were going to do, and actually put it up on the channel, I think we would need to essentially audition a DM as we couldn't risk it being a shambles haha
Maybe we can try a session first without recording to see if it works for the channel. There are YouTube videos that show game play on Roll20 and Tabletop Simulator. They may help you decide if this idea is a good fit for the channel.
Yeah I guess we could. But dont you have to follow a campaign over multiple games? If we didn't record the first one, then the audience wouldn't know what's happening. Either way... I'll watch some videos :)
Another option is to do a one-shot adventure. The adventure would be entirely self-contained, so people won't need to tune in every week for the latest episode. I tend to run those more often than long-term campaigns because I don't get to play rpgs regularly.
Edit: I have been a DM/GM for a long time, but the systems I run are older editions or out of print games. Some folks may get turned off by this, but others still play those games.
I didn't know there were 'one shot adventures' would the characters you use be used in another game? It doesn't seem long enough to level up your character.
One-shot games are usually found in tournaments, but they can also provide a distraction for people who don't have time to complete a long-running campaign. It's also a good way to teach new players the system.
How I usually do it is give the players pre-generated characters, which are sometimes my regular characters. These characters don't have to start at level 1; in fact I prefer giving my players third or fourth-level characters so the characters don't die too easily. If we reuse the characters in another game, the players can choose to keep the same character or try a different one. I do award experience in any case.
The early issues of White Dwarf magazine published articles for D&D. One used Khazad Dum as an introduction to the game. Gandalf was written up as a cleric instead of a wizard.
@eldariontkd I definitely think a one shot would be great way to learn the rules and make sure it all works ok. But I think if we were to do something on the channel... It would need to be an on going campaign. Maybe 1 a month or something. We can discuss in more detail soon. I will see if any other Tolkien channels want to be involved as well, like Men of the West and Geekzone :)
I've done a campaign from a book before with premade characters. It still took a while though. Actually we haven't played since before Christmas. It was fun, though I feel like you have more freedom with the longer games.
No but they look really cool!
I havent played a tabletop RPG though I wouldnt mind playing one

I have tabletop simulator, and i wouldnt mind trying a bit of either D&D edition
I'll try to come up with something soon. I am on Pacific Daylight Time, so hopefully there won't be too much time difference.
That sounds like it could be fun! If we get a few people together and play a game online, perhaps we could record it and get it up on the channel :)
I'm all for that idea!

@Jake Rogers I will try. I don't have any recording equipment, but maybe one of my players does.

I know a fairly good DM. If this was to be done, I might ask him.

@Jake Rogers True. :)

Is Roll20 free and does it need to download? It doesn't seem like it, which it good because you can't really download stuff on chromebook.

Play an entire campaign - not a long one, mind you - perhaps, and if it works, do an actual, longer campaign? It might work. Not my decision though.

Here's a description of the issue on rpggeek.com, showing the cover and a list of articles.
