I'm interested on peoples thoughts, as mine could change on this from one day to the next! Which of the three movies would you guys say is your favourite? and why? :)
The two towers is my favourite. I've always had a soft spot for Rohan. Its my favourite as I believe most characters had most development in this film. Frodo felt the real weight of the ring, Sams loyalty/decency was challenged by Smeagol. Merry and pippin found their courage with the Ents. The friendship of Gimli and Legolas deepens and becomes very genuine. Aragorn starts to lead and inspire men. Gandalf casts down Saurman to take his place as the head of his order. I personally find that it is shot beautifully too.
I think that The return of the king is my favorite, because a lot of the characters get into insane situations where their acting is just fenomenal, especially Aragorn, Frodo and Sam. And of course you can't forget about the most epic fight scenes to date :) And also because the story kind of binds together and the Hobbits finally gets deep into mordor which atleast for me was a exiting part of it, the mystery lands of mordor. In the third film you truly get to see how heavy the ring weighs on Frodo and how much it hurts him. Saurons eye is much more present in the third movie as well, I think that this has a very profound effect in the third movie since it has been in the whole trilogy. I could write much more but I think of the top of my head this is the main reasons why I like the third movie so much.
I can't pick a favorite. The Fellowship is a stunning introduction to awesome characters, the Battle of Helm's Deep is one of the greatest battle scenes of all time, and the Return of the King is the very definition of climactic.
I'm also in The Two Towers camp. I find Rohan and Gondor fascinating (as you can maybe tell from my avatar!) and amongst men, there is a much quicker sense of growth and development (in comparison to, say, elves, given their long history).
The break-up of the Fellowship also allows for some interesting character arches, and the chance to explore how some are rising to the challenge.
And from a visual standpoint, the scenery is stunning!
My favourite is the final film the Return of the King - just watching that final battle scene with King Theoden and the gang and his realisation that Eowyn was there at the end still moves me to tears!! Personally, for me he had the best lines in this trilogy!!
I like the Fellowship at the begining where Merry and Pippin are still joking around a bit, Sam doesn't yet realise that this may be a legend, and Frodo's heart still lies in the Shire. I like that Peter didn't murder the Shire, as was in the books. I love and hate the end of the Return of the King because there is no turning back. The Elves are gone, the Dwarves in hiding, the hobbit are somewhat diminished. Men have flourshed, but at a terrible price. "Here at the end of all things" indeed.
My favorite is the Two Towers because of Sam's speech to Frodo and how awesome watching the Ents march was when I saw it for the first time as a kid. Plus the battle of Helms Deep was in depth and full of intriguing battle sequences. :)
