I actually find it hard to pick...
I do personally like the additional things they added (the White Council for example) in the Live Action versions, but like a lot of people, I think they would have been better as two movies than stretched (Like butter over too much bread) into three movies.
However with the animated, there is no filler, they get on with it, do it well, but obviously because of that you don't necessarily get as much time to become attached to the characters which is a downside when there are so many in the company.
So I would probably say I prefer the live action all in all, but they both have their good and bad points :)
I enjoy the old 1977 version because Glenn and the cast members sing the songs like it's supposed to in the books. But I can't see the newer one with singing in it. It wouldn't make sense. I think that Peter tried to make the Hobbit like LOTR but it's not all about the fighting; however, the 'history' look on the movies are perfect.
Peter Jackson reigns supreme over whatever that cartoon was. Yeah, he screwed some stuff up (did he pull his ideas out of his trousers or something?) but overall they're great movies.
I'm not saying it's a bad movie. I like it, I really do. But it's not the same as the books. You do realise that The Hobbit was meant to be a childrens book right?
I'll have to pick the the animated Hobbit over Jackson's films, which just extended the story more than necessary. Not that the cartoon was perfect, but the movies added superfluous combat scenes and sometimes concentrated on Thorin more than Bilbo.
Edit: There are also audio dramas of The Hobbit and LOTR, which were broadcast on BBC Radio in 1968 and 1981 respectively. Perhaps we should consider those as well.
Really? That's epic! Could you put them in a post on here? I'm going to put the piano sheet music for the Hobbit 1977 on here, I know what it feels like to be missing out on stuff because it's rare or to be bought online.
The Mind's Eye also adapted The Lord of the Rings for radio (also available on CD in a boxed set). It's one of the few adaptations that includes both Tom Bombadil and "Fog on the Barrow-downs" with Frodo and his companions captured by the Barrow-wights.

Yet here we are spending research dollars on it.

I know about them, but I haven't heard them
I have the recordings on CD, although I haven't listened to them in years.

I can check if they are on YouTube. I didn't download the CDs on my computer.
@eldariontkd Okay, thanks!
For me, my favorite adaptation is actually the Mind's Eye audio drama that was broadcast on NPR in the 1980s.
Don't know if I've heard of that one
@ShireofMiddleEarth You might have seen it packaged in a wooden box.
@andrewlaubacher That's the one! There are 4 CDs in the Hobbit set and 7 in the LOTR set.
No, but it looks really cool!

@andrewlaubacher Is it on Youtube? I'd love to see it.
@ShireofMiddleEarth It seems to be, but I take no responsibility for any potential viruses.

It's working for me too, but youtube deleted the second video on the Lord of the Rings playlist
I see. Just use the search function on YouTube.
I can't find it. I wonder if it's anywhere besides YouTube. I'll have a look later today.
Is this the one you're looking for? The Lord of the Rings - Mind's Eye Radio Part Two 3/10
No, it's 2/9. I can't find it on YouTube at all. I'll have to look on a website for it or something.
