in The Hobbit Gandalf would be walking alongside the dwarfs but then he would randomly disappear, I never understood why he would randomly disappear, and I have always wondered what his reason for constantly disappearing was, and i have always wondered where he would disappear to.

where did Gandalf go when he would disappear?

The book never says where Gandalf went, so this is just a wild guess.
It's probable that Gandalf went scouting ahead and perhaps contacted other folk. He may have let Elrond know that Thorin and Company were coming and returned just in time to find Bilbo and the Dwarves captured by the trolls. Likewise, he may scouted ahead in the Misty Mountains and returned to find the others being captured by Goblins, then followed them secretly.
Again, this is pure speculation on my part. The only thing I'm fairly certain of is that Gandalf departed at the edge of Mirkwood in order to join the rest of the White Council and assault Sauron at Dol Guldur.
thank you for that answer, i think that is a very good theory and i agree with you.
This passage is from Chapter 2: Roast Mutton:
"Where did you go to, if I may ask?" said Thorin to Gandalf as they rode along.
"To look ahead," said he.
"And what brought you back in the nick of time?"
"Looking behind," said he.
"Exactly!" said Thorin; "but could you be more plain?"
"I went out to spy out our road. It will soon become dangerous and difficult. Also I was anxious about replenishing our small stock of provisions. I had not gone very far, however, when I met a couple of friends of mine from Rivendell."
In the book it actually says althoguh with no detail, and yes he was with the White Council and went to expell the Necromancer (Sauron) from Mirkwood.
"[...]but every now and again he would open one eye, and listen, when a part of the story which he did not yet know came in. It was in this way that he learned where Gandalf had been to; [...]. It appeared that Gandalf had been to a great council of the white wizards, masters of lore and good magic; and that they had at last driven the Necromancer from his dark hold in the south of Mirkwood."
thank you for that answer, I forgot that had happened in the book
@Ryan Dunne Yeah, the council of white wizards in The Hobbit is revealed in The Lord of the Rings, at the Council of Elrond, to have been the White Council. Gandalf and the rest of the Council drove the Necromancer (Sauron) out of Dol Guldur (Sauron actually anticipated them and deliberately withdrew to Mordor, but they didn't know that at the time).
