Recently, I decided to re-read Hobbit and LOTR so that I could go on to read Tolkien’s other work, which I didn’t do last time I read LOTR. I’m currently halfway through LOTR Book 4 and I’ve bought the Silmarillion. I’ve heard that it can be a tricky read, What common characters and places are there that will make the transition slightly easier?

Characters: Galadriel, Celeborn, Cirdan, Elrond, Gil-galad, Glorfindel. Note that these characters didn't play a big role in the Silmarillion and are only mentioned a few times. The Silmarillion focuses on other characters.
Not too many places are common to both LOTR and The Silmarillion. The action in the latter takes place in Beleriand, which is literally on a different continent. That's all I can say without spoilers.
Well, I wouldn't say that Beleriand was a separate continent. It did comprise the westernmost lands of Middle-earth, though, that were mostly drowned (except for most of Lindon) in the War of Wrath. The lands of Harad could be more properly considered to be another continent, as were Aman, the Dark Land (also called South Land) and the Land of the Sun. That's not counting new lands that arose in the Change of the World.
